Hi guys

I'm in the middle of collecting all information on Orange Juice via the web and articles etc so I can build a definitive OJ website.

The site will contain biog, discography, lyrics, videos, streaming audio, articles/interviews, reviews AND a definitive list of gigs that OJ played! This has never been done as far as I know and i'd like to have a bash at it!

* BOOTLEGGED SHOW

If anyone can fill in the blanks or add some dates for me then i'd be most grateful!

I also plan to have unofficial bootlegs of OJ and radio-sessions streaming on my site - so far I have both Kid Jensen radio sessions, the John Peel ones, a John Peel session from 1981 with Edwyn having a chat and playing "new single" Poor Old Soul, the Mike Read session, full OJ gig at London Lyceum 1983, the three tracks from Glasgow Pavillion gig given away free on tape with What Presence ?! 7"

I have some tracks from the Stirling University gig and one from a Keele gig - would obviously love to get the rest - I know of a handful of other bootlegs floating about - any details would be great.

I'd also like to investigate on how we'd go about getting all the OJ albums put up on iTunes so peeps can buy em??? It's utterly criminal that they are out of print!!

I just want OJ to have a proper and definitive website - there's precious few things scattered about everywhere on blogs etc and it'd be great to have them in one place :-)

I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well

Hello

The very first time I met Edwyn, Steven, James and David was when I did the monitors for Orange Juice at Middlesborough Rock Garden. This obviously led to a highly rewarding friendship/musical relationship with Edwyn as I played in the very last incarnation of Orange Juice and in Edwyn's solo line up until 1997.
I can't remember what year it was - I'm guessing 1981. They played about 12 songs in 23 minutes because all the audience were skinheads who promptly turned their backs on the band because they were 'poofs'.
Great list Jamie.
Did OJ only play Manchester twice, I seem to remember a Manchestet Poly gig in between Rafters and The Hacienda gigs.

I wonder if you could put a star next to all the gigs where a bootleg audio or video exists.

I have about ten gigs on mp3, I will post the details next time I am logged on using that PC.
Thanks gang - i've added all those dates

Keep em coming if you find more :-)
Well Jamie you are a dedicated dear. Anything I can do to help, give me a shout. I'm a decentish manager but a very bad and disorganised archivist. The good news is that I am in the advanced stages of sorting out the release of a box set of Orange Juice albums and rarities by Domino Records. This will obviously be available in download form too on iTunes and elsewhere. Kris Gillespie, who heads up their US office is tenacious and thorough and is pulling it all together. I am currently sitting on a huge pile of boxes of every recording the band made for Polydor, all owned and controlled by the members who are more than happy with Domino handling the releases. watch this space for news. More power to your elbow!
Wahey!

This sounds totally amazing!!!
Hi Jamie,
Saw OJ at Bannockburn Community Centre but can't remember if 81/82/83
Allan
A few updates for you;

Nite Club 11/4/80, Nottm 31/3/81, Rafters 1/4/81, Sheffield 2/4/81, Leeds 20/8/81 all exist on tape. I also have a tape of Liverpool Pickwicks 19/8/81 which you don't have listed.

Glasgow tech June '80 doesn't exist, this was the 'guestimate' date given in error to the 17/4/80 show when it first appeared on the scene.

I recorded OJ at Edinburgh Valentinos 10th May 81 and also Edinburgh Nite Club 10th July 81 - so these definitely do exist on tape as well!

My Valentinos tape has been in circulation for many years and to me it is still a joy to listen to... the gig was a bit of a shambles due to continual equipment failure etc, but the inbetween banter was "classic Edwyn" and when the band did get up and running, the song renditions that night were totally spot-on, especially the final encore, Moscow - a better version I don't think you're ever likely to hear - and well worthy of addition to any future Edwyn box set / compilation methinks!

Cheers

All added and amended - thanks again!
I would just like to reiterate that Alan's recording of OJ at Valentinos on 10-5-81 is a classic and it's not just Edwyn who is in fine form. James had to keep the crowd entertained while Edwyn was offstage getting his guitar fixed, this included playing a bit of Rhaposdy In Blue by George Gershwin and talking about Veronica Lake. If there was anyway this could be officially released I'm sure it would be very well received and be a good accompaniment to the Josef K Live At Valentinos CD released a few years ago which also used one of Alan's recordings. Here's hoping something can be worked out.

I remember seeing OJ at Mountford Hall, Liverpool Uni with Strawberry Switchblade in support, must have been in 1982 because it's mentioned here. I'm pretty sure they played there twice once before the Royal Court and once afterward. I also went to see them at Brady's (which use to be Eric's), I went along with my brother who asked the burly bouncer if he was taking the piss when he told us that the band would be on stage gone 12.00 midnight. Too young to have a car and the last bus and train home was about 10.30 and for some strange reason the bouncer had took a disliking to my brother, we spent the next two hours playing arcade games in Lime Street and then went home. Mind you to all our friends the day after it was the best gig we'd ever been to.
I also have a tape of Liverpool Pickwicks 19/8/81 which you don't have listed.

Pickwicks would be renamed Plato`s Ballroom on certain nights so I think the gig stated 31/08/81 may be wrong. My cultural sources have let me down! Although it seems Paul Simpson of the Wild Swans thinks the gig was in 1980. See link. http://www.whisperinandhollerin.co.uk/chat/chat.asp?id=1392

Art Work and Bum Fuzz

Posted by scott owen on May 5, 2017 at 17:15 0 Comments

My Bum Fuzz unit just arrived in California along with some plectrums with Edwin art. It took me along time to order this unit, but the twenty five year gestation period for it to be built surely eclipses my lack of urgency. Best regards all...

Thank you for the music

A while back I asked Edwyn if he would let me use his music on a little film I made.  Here is the result: Mill Mechanics

Thanks for that.

Shareefa Energy – ‘Reasoning With Self’ - Review

A few months ago the BBC offered a profile of new emerging female poets, ‘Women Who Spit’. Watching the short films by Jemima Foxtrot, Cecilia Knapp and Deanna Rodger, I noted with great relief that the art of poetry is alive and well. I have always been fascinated by the medium. The ability to express intricate thoughts and feelings in a few lines of words. It is the most empowering process. And empowerment through self-expression… Continue

Dear Edwyn,

Can I just thank you for your contribution to my life. From that very first shiver I got listening to Felicity on the John Peel Show to the smile I still express today when you burst into laughter half way through Consolation Prize, it's important I let you know how much your music means to me before one of us croaks it.

I was hooked instantly and bought all the singles and albums, the ten inches, 12 inches and even ripped the flexi discs off Smash Hits and Melody…
