Hi guys

I'm in the middle of collecting all information on Orange Juice via the web and articles etc so I can build a definitive OJ website.

The site will contain biog, discography, lyrics, videos, streaming audio, articles/interviews, reviews AND a definitive list of gigs that OJ played! This has never been done as far as I know and i'd like to have a bash at it!

* BOOTLEGGED SHOW

If anyone can fill in the blanks or add some dates for me then i'd be most grateful!

I also plan to have unofficial bootlegs of OJ and radio-sessions streaming on my site - so far I have both Kid Jensen radio sessions, the John Peel ones, a John Peel session from 1981 with Edwyn having a chat and playing "new single" Poor Old Soul, the Mike Read session, full OJ gig at London Lyceum 1983, the three tracks from Glasgow Pavillion gig given away free on tape with What Presence ?! 7"

I have some tracks from the Stirling University gig and one from a Keele gig - would obviously love to get the rest - I know of a handful of other bootlegs floating about - any details would be great.

I'd also like to investigate on how we'd go about getting all the OJ albums put up on iTunes so peeps can buy em??? It's utterly criminal that they are out of print!!

I just want OJ to have a proper and definitive website - there's precious few things scattered about everywhere on blogs etc and it'd be great to have them in one place :-)

Mark D - might be you can find some more stuff going through Record Mirror though dont think they listed all gigs did they? I think the UEA gig was 22nd based on 2 pieces of evidence attached - i contacted Mark from the Farmer's Boys who supported but that didn't help reveal any more details. Manchester - Fagin's was at Eden, above Rafters, apparenetly, so I think Fagin's is best description but can add Eden in brackets! The liverpool gig is news to me - interesting! I have a tape of a gig in 1982 that might be from there (See Facebook Postcard Records Fan group).

Weird this misses out London Venue 20th Jan. But these seem quite low key gigs with the new drummer Zeke, only 3 rehearsals before that first gig (where Stephen Daly is present and heckles the band!)

Found the Liverpool gig: support from The Balcony (who sounded a bit like the Associates at times). Gig of the month!

Ok will keep my eyes peeled (pun intended). Happy Christmas.

I mentioned a while ago the "Cambridge Grad Ball" gig in June/July 1984, which you've listed at the bottom.

I've narrowed this down to 18,19 or 20 June 1984 - I'm hoping to get a precise date soon from the archivist at the college!

The venue listing would be "Cambridge, Selwyn College May Ball".

Support from The Telephone Boxes.

A couple of pictures attached....

How wonderful! The Telephone Boxes new to me! nice to see Edwyn, Zeke, Paul and Jonny in action. And the fact you are appraoching college archivist - proper detective work. Having said that i guess Grace or Edwyn might have diaries that tell us the answer...!

I am really unclear here as to gigs in that week before they record Dada at Palais on the 21st. Did Dunstable or Leicester happen? Can only find one reference to each anywhere and no photos or reviews...if they cancelled because of poor ticket sales did they take this more lucrative gig instead? It was a last minute thing, right?

yes, they were booked maybe 1-2 weeks before at most, so perhaps OJ were free because one of the dates you are querying was cancelled.

Boomtown Rats were originally due to play but the guitarist broke his leg so they pulled out.

The entertainments officer at college went around the students rooms and asked if they would prefer Orange Juice or Sad Café as a replacement.  A couple of us made a heartfelt plea for OJ which may have swayed them, since Sad Café got most of the votes!

We tried to chat to Edwyn and Alan Horne "backstage" (our college television room) But they really were not in the mood so we quickly left them to it.  Hundreds of Cambridge students in dinner jackets not being their natural habit I should think!

But they played well, with the set list as per the rest of that tour. So I really enjoyed it even if they didn't (there were dry few of the gags and chit-chat I came to know and love in later years from bootlegs, later gigs etc.)

Perhaps I will try Grace on Twitter - I guess we she was booking them back then.  Will let you know!  (I'm at @marklawrence33 if you're following Grace...perhaps a nudge from you as well might help nudge her to get out the diaries...)

I dont know if Ian Cranna was manager then still?

I didn't know he ever was!?  That explains the great reviews from "Red Starr" (aka Ian Cranna) in the Smash Hits indie pages for the Postcard singles!

Yes indeed he championed all Postcard acts in Smash Hits, and became their manager. Not much written about his time with OJ but it contained some difficult moments like OJ splitting up only a few weeks after signing for Polydor, and later trying to placate the record label when OJ got banned from TOTP for David's drug (over)consumption leading to him falling into the crowd...

Grace may have been in Cambridge but I wouldn't have known who she was.   She was in charge by the time of the Dada with Juice video which was first shown, what, late 1984?

So perhaps booking OJ into a private event for toffs was the last straw for Ian Cranna?!   Not quite "Puppet Show + Spinal Tap" but still.

I did go to an OJ gig supporting (or they other way around ) with Josef K.

It was in a venue called the The Drill Hall ( off Tottenham Court Road, London ) All i can rembember is OJ were briliiant and Josef K announced each song via an airport type announcement over the PA i.e Josek's next song is...

But got to have been 80 or 81 ?!

Dave Black

Now you mention it, I'm amazed I've never seen/heard any band try that PA announcement thing.  Good, arty fun!

Art Work and Bum Fuzz

Posted by scott owen on May 5, 2017 at 17:15 0 Comments

My Bum Fuzz unit just arrived in California along with some plectrums with Edwin art. It took me along time to order this unit, but the twenty five year gestation period for it to be built surely eclipses my lack of urgency. Best regards all...

Thank you for the music

A while back I asked Edwyn if he would let me use his music on a little film I made.  Here is the result: Mill Mechanics

Thanks for that.

Shareefa Energy – ‘Reasoning With Self’ - Review

A few months ago the BBC offered a profile of new emerging female poets, ‘Women Who Spit’. Watching the short films by Jemima Foxtrot, Cecilia Knapp and Deanna Rodger, I noted with great relief that the art of poetry is alive and well. I have always been fascinated by the medium. The ability to express intricate thoughts and feelings in a few lines of words. It is the most empowering process. And empowerment through self-expression… Continue

Dear Edwyn,

Can I just thank you for your contribution to my life. From that very first shiver I got listening to Felicity on the John Peel Show to the smile I still express today when you burst into laughter half way through Consolation Prize, it's important I let you know how much your music means to me before one of us croaks it.

I was hooked instantly and bought all the singles and albums, the ten inches, 12 inches and even ripped the flexi discs off Smash Hits and Melody…
