Hi guys

I'm in the middle of collecting all information on Orange Juice via the web and articles etc so I can build a definitive OJ website.

The site will contain biog, discography, lyrics, videos, streaming audio, articles/interviews, reviews AND a definitive list of gigs that OJ played! This has never been done as far as I know and i'd like to have a bash at it!

* BOOTLEGGED SHOW

If anyone can fill in the blanks or add some dates for me then i'd be most grateful!

I also plan to have unofficial bootlegs of OJ and radio-sessions streaming on my site - so far I have both Kid Jensen radio sessions, the John Peel ones, a John Peel session from 1981 with Edwyn having a chat and playing "new single" Poor Old Soul, the Mike Read session, full OJ gig at London Lyceum 1983, the three tracks from Glasgow Pavillion gig given away free on tape with What Presence ?! 7"

I have some tracks from the Stirling University gig and one from a Keele gig - would obviously love to get the rest - I know of a handful of other bootlegs floating about - any details would be great.

I'd also like to investigate on how we'd go about getting all the OJ albums put up on iTunes so peeps can buy em??? It's utterly criminal that they are out of print!!

I just want OJ to have a proper and definitive website - there's precious few things scattered about everywhere on blogs etc and it'd be great to have them in one place :-)

The Undertones tour kicked off on Dec 8th and on the morning of the 9th (the day of the Glasgow show) we woke up to the news that John Lennon had been killed. I remember feeling this weird mix of shock and sadness that John Lennon had been gunned down and total nervous excitement (shitting my pants) that we were going to be playing in our home town to such a big crowd. The Undertones played a tribute to John Lennon that night but I can’t remember which song they performed.
Hello, like the site and hope you fill in all the pieces. I saw Orange Juice two times. Second, and easier to remember, was at Leicester University, on a Saturday some time in spring 1982. But unlike most gigs there it wasn't in the main hall, it was in the basement refrectory area - can remember David playing on the table football down there before the gig. Support was by China Crisis, who had just released African and White as a single. First time I saw them was in London - may have been ICA , early 81, but - and I used to go to many gigs a week back then - I have a vague memory of maybe having seen them at the Marquee in Wardour Street in late summer/autumn 1980, and speaking to band before the gig. Apologies if this latter is not correct, but Leicester in spring 82 with China Crisis is definitely correct!!
I seem to remember that Leicester University gig was a Friday night rather than a Saturday one. I have the poster at home so will be able to confirm the actual date as soon as I manage to dig it out.

With regard to Retford Porterhouse, Orange Juice played there at least twice. The March 1981 date was the second time I saw them (following on from Nottingham Rock City, supporting The Undertones, the first ever gig at that particular venue (it wasn't meant to be but there had been problems with the licence IIRC)) and that was the date at which it was advertised as 'A Futurist Night featuring Orange Juice'. This puts the bootleg (if it is the one where the bass strings go and the band play Heart of Song and What Goes On) at a later date (particularly as it features Malcolm Ross and he didn't join until later in the year / early 82) as the 'futurist' gig is mentioned by Edwyn on the bootleg.

There was also a date at The Dome Theatre, Brighton (the small part of it where the Marychain played, not the large part where Go-Betweens supported Aztec Camera) during (IIRC) May 1985. It was when the Johnny chap was in the band.

I've a few relevant documents at home, including a survey the band filled in backstage at Rock City which revealed their obsessions with The Last Picture Show and What's The Matter Boy, and an 'interview' I did with them at the same venue. I'll try to find and upload them.

Some great pictures of OJ from a gig supporting The Fall at Manchester Poly in 1981 (i think)

Does anyone know the precise date and was this the first time OJ played Manchester?
I think we played the Hacienda more than once?

That does make sense date-wise.

I've added it on.

According to the book The Hacienda Must be Built by Jon Savage, OJ played there on Tuesday, 15th June 1982, the month after its opening party hosted by Bernard Manning!!??
Did you play there with Paul Haig?

I remember seeing you both at the Manchester International (2) when you both came on with red horns, I think it was the time of his Chain lp.
Completely irrelevant to the topic at hand but all this talk of Paul H and Malcolm has made me recall a Josef K gig at a venue called, I think, Jaspers in York in about '81. It was a cracker.
Leicester University gig was Friday March 5th 1982. Poster available in photos.
Yeah! I think we did - could be getting confused. Aztec C. maybe played there also. But I think OJ played there twice... although I could be wrong. ha ha

Yeah remember that one - was there a driving range at the venue?!? Outside off course. Was the place some kind of country club... just outside York?

Don't remember the driving range but "country club outside York" is right on the money. Seem to remember it was a Monday night thing - saw Delta 5 either the week before or after. Thursday night was always Leeds Warehouse which was a trendy disco till midnight then the band played for an hour (no support, no encores, just an hour) and then it reverted to trendy disco. Moscow mules we drank. Then slept on benches at Leeds station before getting the milk train back to Hull, getting home for about an hours sleep before getting up for work on Friday, or getting me Mum to phone in sick. Saw OJ one week then Bow Wow Wow (with Boy George dancing) the next week. Heh!
does anyone have info on the gig that was cancelled at the then lyceum ballroom in london - would have been around 84 or 85 and OJ split up soon after that if i recall, maybe it was later ?. myself and some friends went to london to see the show, we must have been around 17. thrilled to final see them live, but alas it wasnt meant to be. we had to wait a few more years until the hope and despair tour - again i think ? maybe a dont shilly shally tour..., and i think maybe at the town and country club in camden
Ive always wondered if that was the last show that never was ?

Art Work and Bum Fuzz

Posted by scott owen on May 5, 2017 at 17:15 0 Comments

My Bum Fuzz unit just arrived in California along with some plectrums with Edwin art. It took me along time to order this unit, but the twenty five year gestation period for it to be built surely eclipses my lack of urgency. Best regards all...

Thank you for the music

A while back I asked Edwyn if he would let me use his music on a little film I made.  Here is the result: Mill Mechanics

Thanks for that.

Shareefa Energy – ‘Reasoning With Self’ - Review

A few months ago the BBC offered a profile of new emerging female poets, ‘Women Who Spit’. Watching the short films by Jemima Foxtrot, Cecilia Knapp and Deanna Rodger, I noted with great relief that the art of poetry is alive and well. I have always been fascinated by the medium. The ability to express intricate thoughts and feelings in a few lines of words. It is the most empowering process. And empowerment through self-expression… Continue

Dear Edwyn,

Can I just thank you for your contribution to my life. From that very first shiver I got listening to Felicity on the John Peel Show to the smile I still express today when you burst into laughter half way through Consolation Prize, it's important I let you know how much your music means to me before one of us croaks it.

I was hooked instantly and bought all the singles and albums, the ten inches, 12 inches and even ripped the flexi discs off Smash Hits and Melody…
