Hi guys

I'm in the middle of collecting all information on Orange Juice via the web and articles etc so I can build a definitive OJ website.

The site will contain biog, discography, lyrics, videos, streaming audio, articles/interviews, reviews AND a definitive list of gigs that OJ played! This has never been done as far as I know and i'd like to have a bash at it!

* BOOTLEGGED SHOW

If anyone can fill in the blanks or add some dates for me then i'd be most grateful!

I also plan to have unofficial bootlegs of OJ and radio-sessions streaming on my site - so far I have both Kid Jensen radio sessions, the John Peel ones, a John Peel session from 1981 with Edwyn having a chat and playing "new single" Poor Old Soul, the Mike Read session, full OJ gig at London Lyceum 1983, the three tracks from Glasgow Pavillion gig given away free on tape with What Presence ?! 7"

I have some tracks from the Stirling University gig and one from a Keele gig - would obviously love to get the rest - I know of a handful of other bootlegs floating about - any details would be great.

I'd also like to investigate on how we'd go about getting all the OJ albums put up on iTunes so peeps can buy em??? It's utterly criminal that they are out of print!!

I just want OJ to have a proper and definitive website - there's precious few things scattered about everywhere on blogs etc and it'd be great to have them in one place :-)

June 24th 1984 Birmingham Odeon... See my ticket on the photos section
I saw them play in my home town at Wolverhampton Lafayette Club, but sorry the date escapes me. Edwyn wore a sailor shirt and his Davy Crockett hat...I may still have a couple of photos I took at the gig. I think this was the second time I saw the OJ's. I seem to recall John Peel announcing on his show on a Friday (was he on Friday's then?) that he was doing a gig at Manchester the next day and among the bands playing would be the OJ's, Josef K and The Fall. I must've made a quick call to a friend or two and on the Saturday morning off we were on the train to Manchester. I seem to recall it was at the Poly, though if so was a different part to where I later saw ACR...or was that the Uni? Anyway, I recall Josef K didn't play and lots of nervous but as always welcome (I hate bands that talk...all except the OJ's that is) banter from Edwyn...maybe someone broke a string. I think both of the shows were 2nd~3rd single era...I know that "Falling and Laughing" was already sold out in shops when I started listening to the OJ's, though my friend had a copy.
The next (and maybe last) time I saw them was I think at Keele Uni with Paul Quinn guesting.
I saw OJ at Hardgate Hall, Clydebank in 1979 - I'm pretty sure it was a football teams xmas disco!!!

I recall a drunk shouting "Gonnae gie's Brown Sugar!" between every song! ha! ha!

13.05.1984 Edinburgh, Caley Palais
03.11.1984 Newcastle, University
Sorry - just joined and not had chance to go back through all the posts yet but the 1981 gig at Middlesbrough Rock Garden was definitely not the 30th March as that was a Monday. The Rock Garden only put groups on Fridays and Saturdays and very occasionally midweek but never a Monday.
I was at the gig and would bet my last dollar it was a Saturday. I remember it as a fairly poor night - the Rock Garden was a fairly violent place and groups like Orange Juice were not very well received.

David

Other than the ICA and The Venue 6/8/81 could I obtain copies of these please??????

I would be overjoyed.

Craig

In 1984 there was a gig at Tolworth Recreation Centre (my first!)

I think the Crystal Palace Free festival could have been a Rock Against Racsim thing. There was definitely a London park event with OJ, Aswad and I think Madness on the line up.

Was the Hammersmith Palais (Dada With Juice) gig supported by Jonathan Richman? If it wasn't, I think there must have been another gig there that year.

PS I can see myself in the front row in Dada with Juice...
A poster mentioned OJ playing in 1981 or 82 at Leeds Poly. It was 17th June 82, and the Go Betweens supported them. If I remember rightly it was a hastily arranged end-of-term gig, your list shows that date as being in Hull, but I was there, it was in Leeds, and I've got the ticket from it ! I was also down to see the band at Middlesboro Town Hall in July 84 sometime, as I was working there at the time and got a ticket, but I couldn't make it as my (charming) employer dragged me back to the Leeds office on gig-day.

Saw Edwyn and the band this last Saturday at the Brudenell in Leeds for the first time since those days, and it was an absolutely memorable gig. Dying Day, Consolation Prize, Blue Boy and F&L rolled into stuff from the last 20 years and the new album. If any 40 something (?) has a finer back-catalogue I've yet to hear it !
Interested to find this thread, and see there are a few people I know on here (hi Rich!), but for oblique reasons. I'm doing a similar thing for Prefab Sprout (http://psgigs.wikispaces.com). The interest specifically is that I'm hunting for original tapes. Back in the day I remember market stalls selling cassettes of just about all the local gigs - this was in Brighton and London but I'm guessing it was the same everywhere. But few if any of these every turn up these days. I've looked in lots of places, asked on dimeadozen, talked to people in Camden market and record fairs, but never been able to hit the motherlode which exists somewhere in my fevered imagination.

The thought was that someone may know someone who knows someone who did this commercial taping and has a stash of tapes in a loft somewhere. Looking at the lists here impressive numbers of OJ related things from roughly the period of interest have turned up, so I thought it was worth asking. Incidentally if a Sprout recording has turned up online somewhere I'll almost certainly know of it (and in many cases will have originated it), so I don't need googling by proxy, I'm mainly interested in trying to find my way into networks of old school tapers.

So let me know. If not appropriate to add things to the thread there's an e-mail address on my site, but I'll be checking back here too.
I attended an Orange Juice gig in the Victoria Hotel (I think - it might have been the Douglas) in Aberdeen, in 1981. I'm not certain of the date, but I know New Order played there around the same time, and their gig list says they played on 18th April. I'm fairly sure it would have been a week or so either side of that. I do remember that at the start it was announced that the gig would be a short one because Edwyn was still recovering from being assaulted in Glasgow a day or two before.

There are pictures of Edwyn at Metros in Aberdeen with a black eye/patch

the gig in the refectory of leicester uni students union was ealier than 1982, i was at the gig and reckon i was a first or second year student at the time which puts it 1980 or 1981 imho

Art Work and Bum Fuzz

Posted by scott owen on May 5, 2017 at 17:15 0 Comments

My Bum Fuzz unit just arrived in California along with some plectrums with Edwin art. It took me along time to order this unit, but the twenty five year gestation period for it to be built surely eclipses my lack of urgency. Best regards all...

Thank you for the music

A while back I asked Edwyn if he would let me use his music on a little film I made.  Here is the result: Mill Mechanics

Thanks for that.

Shareefa Energy – ‘Reasoning With Self’ - Review

A few months ago the BBC offered a profile of new emerging female poets, ‘Women Who Spit’. Watching the short films by Jemima Foxtrot, Cecilia Knapp and Deanna Rodger, I noted with great relief that the art of poetry is alive and well. I have always been fascinated by the medium. The ability to express intricate thoughts and feelings in a few lines of words. It is the most empowering process. And empowerment through self-expression… Continue

Dear Edwyn,

Can I just thank you for your contribution to my life. From that very first shiver I got listening to Felicity on the John Peel Show to the smile I still express today when you burst into laughter half way through Consolation Prize, it's important I let you know how much your music means to me before one of us croaks it.

I was hooked instantly and bought all the singles and albums, the ten inches, 12 inches and even ripped the flexi discs off Smash Hits and Melody…
