Edwin Collins is a world-renowned musician, powerful baritone vocalist, guitarist, music producer and television producer, and actor who has appeared in 15 feature films. In 2007 a documentary film was made about the singer. I have written numerous academic writing sample on the life and biography of Edwin Collins
The calling card of Edwin Collins (musician from Great Britain) was his super hit, A Girl Like You.
Edwin Collins was born on August 23, 1959, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He used every day of his childhood to listen to as much music as possible while learning to play the guitar.
In 1976, he formed the Nu-Sonics, a quartet band, with bassist David McClymont, drummer Steven Daly, and guitarist James Kirk.
It was renamed Orange Juice in 1979. The band's debut single, which was released in 1980, was called Falling and Laughing. It caused a great storm of criticism, and the guys recorded it for less than 100 pounds.
The only worthy creation (the super hit of Orange Juice) was Rip It Up, which reached the 8th position in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart. The band existed till 1985, then broke up, and Edwin started his solo career.
The solo career of Edwin Collins
After leaving the band and taking up solo performances, the musician did not soon gain popularity. It wasn't until 1994 that he recorded his single A Girl Like You, which became very popular, featured in such films as: "The Empire Store," "Charlie's Angels: Just Go," and Magic Piper of Love.
In 1997, the single became the soundtrack to the movie Austin Powers: International Mystery Man. Thanks to the song A Girl Like You, the musician got excellent material gain to create his recording studio.
In 1994 Edwin Collins became the producer of his solo album Gorgeous George. As a producer, he has worked with notable artists and bands as Robert Foster, Little Barry, Vic Howard, The Proclaimers, Space, A House, The Cribs.
In 2004 he was invited by the Italian band Gabih to record their second album Freedom.
The year 2005 was a real test for the singer. A severe illness overtook him. Nothing foretold a significant problem. When the artist went on the radio claiming he had food poisoning, he experienced nausea, dizziness.
Then in the hospital, where he was taken for examination, it turned out that the symptoms were not caused by poisoning. There was bleeding in the brain. In February 2005, Edwin underwent surgery, which took a significant toll on his health. His recovery was prolonged and took a long time.
The result of the disease was aphasia, a condition in which a person cannot use words correctly. Then the musician could only pronounce two words: "yes" and "no."
In 2007, the singer's seventh studio album Home Again was released on the Heavenly Records label. All the materials for its creation were ready even before Edwin fell ill. Then only minor corrections were made to the album during his rehabilitation.
In November 2009, the singer appeared in front of a significant audience for the first time since his battle with a severe illness. It was an appearance on stage at the Londons Bloomsbury Ballroom. When the musician first began interacting with the audience, fans held their breath, worried for their idol, so slow was his pronunciation of the words.
But when he sang, and the first sounds of the singer's powerful baritone were heard, everyone exhaled, it was him, their favorite, everything fell into place!
In his personal life, Edwyn Collins is in whole order - he has been married for many years to his beloved woman Grace Maxwell, who became his companion in life and creativity. Grace went through every ordeal with her husband while he was in treatment, helping him return to everyday existence.
She worked side by side with her husband for many years, acting as his assistant, effectively his right hand. In 2009, she fought with Warner Music Group for the rights to A Girl Like You and won them. On October 2, the rights to the single remained with its creator," Grace told reporters.
In 2009, the musician received the Ivor Novello Awards in May.
In September 2010, the eighth album was released. They began recording the album in November 2008. It was called Losing Sleep. The album included all the compositions written as a result of experiences suffered in a hospital bed. In March 2013, another album, Understated, was released.
In 2014, documentary filmmakers James Hall and Edward Lovelace released The Possibilities Are Endless, which is about Collins' struggle with and victory over her illness.
The title became the words that the musician never tired of repeating to himself while in the hospital, which in Russian means: "Possibilities Are Endless."
